Maybe you want to turn your writing hobby into something more as an essayist, blogger, or journalist. Everyone has a story to tell. Share your story with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story can make all the difference. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. Write from the heart. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to develop the story you want to tell.

character

What makes your character unique, intriguing, and fallible. Is the character the hero, antihero, or peripheral character? Determine the character’s significance to the overall story.

Setting

Where does your story take place? Settings should include several locations for the action and reflect the mood, time, and theme.

Plot & Conflict

Plot is the sequence of events occurring in your story. A simple plot format contains five essential elements. These elements are exposition/background, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution. Writing is an art form. Storytelling is like a musical performance.

Conflict is tension between characters. You have the hero who comes up against the villain. Great stories have multiple layers of conflict.

resolution

How do you resolve the conflict of your story? Many times the hero is saved and gets to live another day. In the end, the main character overcomes the adversities you have written about throughout the story. Then there are times when the hero or antihero dies. Regardless, the reader is free from wondering or lingering questions.
